Political parties are traditionally considered the main agents in participatory democracy and the protagonists of political communication. However, a consistent and visible feature of the political communication landscape has been the increasing in number and diversity of actors involved in political persuasion, both nationally and internationally. This colloquium aims to discuss the role of lobbyists, think tanks, political consultants, spin doctors, ie the industry of political persuasion. The focus of the debate will be on the ways in which these actors try to influence the political and governmental process through speeches, political campaigns and communication strategies and the different issues that arise in relation to the transparency of the deliberative processes and the quality of democracy.
